Using Metallic Pigment in Epoxy Resin

Updated: 4 days ago

I've made these solar system orreries with wooden bases, dyed resin bases, and painted resin bases. But I could never figure out how to make them look metallic.

I've finally figured it out! The flakes I have don't mix like the liquid dyes I own. Instead, you coat the mold with these flakes, and then pour black resin to cure with it. The result is super cool! It changes color with the light, and gives it a little more of a sci-fi feel.  🌌 🪐

This orrery is available in my Store, if anyone wants to add some SPACE to your space 😉

My first attempt at using the metallic flakes didn't go as planned, but still turned out cool - I mistakenly mixed the flakes, and it gave a sort of sparkly appearance, which you could say mimics a galaxy or night sky:

So to sum up what I've learned, pouring the flakes into the resin gives this sparkly result:

And brushing the flakes on the inside of the mold before pouring black resin results in this:

I think they're both really cool, and I'm not sure which is better. Give me your opinion! I'd love to know which one people like more:

Which do you like better?

  • Sparkly Flakes

  • Metallic
