Amigurumi Teto from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Writer: Heather MillerHeather Miller

One of the first Studio Ghibli movies I saw was Nausicaa of the Valley the Wind, which featured a young girl that had a close attachment to animals and nature. Teto is a fox-squirrel that she befriends, and it comes along on her adventures by riding on her shoulder. I always wished for my own Teto, so now I've made him out of yarn! Amigurumi crochet pattern is available at my Etsy.

Here's a process video showing me put him together:

I took regular safety eyes and painted them green, and coated them in UV resin to protect the paint and give them some shine.

By giving him arms that loop around into a "hug", he's able to fit onto a purse or backpack strap and be your very own shoulder buddy.

For his mane I used plush yarn, to give it an extra fuzzy feeling. Here's the difference of how the stitches look using regular yarn compared to the plush yarn (both using the same size hook).

I added some plush yarn to his ears as well, to give him some tufts

Materials required:

  • Yellow acrylic yarn, 4 ply

  • Brown acrylic yarn, 4 ply

  • Cream Plush yarn, 4 ply

  • "G" 4 mm hook

  • 2 10mm safety eyes (painted green)

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

  • Polyester fill stuffing
